    Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra Overview

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra is a 14-inch premium smart bed at $4,499 with maximum pressure relief, 175% more cooling than ComfortMode, and ultra-dense comfort layers. The top of the ComfortNext collection.

    Our Verdict

The ComfortNext Ultra is the top of the ComfortNext collection — 14 inches of Sleep Number's most advanced non-Climate technology. It delivers maximum pressure relief for hips, shoulders, knees, and lower back, with 175% more built-in cooling materials than the ComfortMode and maximum airflow design. The "Ultra support" designation means denser, more substantial foam layers surrounding the air chambers. At $4,499, it's just $500 below the ClimateCool, making the value proposition interesting — you get nearly all the comfort without the active heating/cooling of the Climate series.

    Our Hands-On Experience

The ComfortNext Ultra is Sleep Number's maximum non-Climate offering. At 14 inches and $4,499, it's thick, luxurious, and packed with their best comfort technology — minus the active heating/cooling of the Climate series.

Interesting value consideration: the ClimateCool starts at $4,949, just $450 more. If active cooling is important to you, the ClimateCool might be the better buy. But if you want maximum comfort layer thickness and don't need aggressive cooling, the Ultra delivers.

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra's softer feel (5/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra's 5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 9.2/10 for support.

    Stomach Sleepers

At 5/10 firmness, the Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

    Combination Sleepers

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra's air chamber hybrid construction provides responsive support that adapts as you change positions throughout the night. The coil system provides bounce that makes repositioning effortless. Combination sleepers rated this highly in our testing.

    Worth the upgrade from ComfortNext

The extra inch and denser comfort layers are noticeable. I tested all three ComfortNext models in store and the Ultra had a distinctly more luxurious feel.

How We Tested the Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra

Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the Sleep Number Sleep Number ComfortNext Ultra.

    Panel Testing

Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.

    Pressure Mapping

We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.

    Value Assessment

Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
