Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review
The original viscoelastic foam mattress brand, born from NASA tech.
About Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic commercialized the viscoelastic foam originally developed by NASA in the 1970s to cushion astronauts during launch. The Swedish-founded company brought TEMPUR material to market in the early 1990s, and the patented formulation remains the densest, most pressure-relieving consumer memory foam available.
After merging with Sealy in 2012, Tempur Sealy International became the world's largest mattress company. Tempur-Pedic itself remains the premium tier, sold through select retailers and direct-to-consumer with prices ranging from $2,000 (TEMPUR-Cloud) to $6,500+ (TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze).
Despite copycat memory foam from dozens of competitors, no other brand has replicated TEMPUR material's specific viscoelastic response. That moat is real — Tempur-Pedic mattresses are the only ones in our pressure-mapping protocol that consistently score 9.5+ for full-body conformance.
What they make
Premium memory foam and hybrid mattresses; pillows; adjustable bases.
Origin
American-owned — manufactured in Albuquerque, NM and Duffield, VA
Tempur-Pedic Signature Technologies
TEMPUR Material
Patented viscoelastic foam approximately 3× denser than standard memory foam — the only foam that conforms to body shape with near-zero recoil.
TEMPUR-APR (Advanced Pressure Relief)
Updated TEMPUR formulation in ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt models for slightly faster recovery without losing conformance.
TEMPUR-CM+ Cooling Cover
Phase-change material covers on Breeze models — measurably cool surface temperatures by 2–4°F vs. standard TEMPUR.
Best for
- Side sleepers with shoulder or hip pain who need maximum pressure relief
- Couples — TEMPUR foam has near-zero motion transfer, the best in our testing
- Buyers willing to invest $3,000+ for a 15–20 year mattress
- Anyone who has tried other memory foam and found it insufficient
Not ideal for
- Hot sleepers (unless choosing a Breeze model)
- Combo sleepers who change positions frequently — TEMPUR is slow to recover
- Budget shoppers — entry models start at $2,000+

Tempur-Pedic FAQ
Are Tempur-Pedic mattresses worth the price?
For pressure-sensitive sleepers — yes. TEMPUR material genuinely outperforms competitor memory foam in our pressure-mapping lab by a measurable margin. For everyone else, brands like Saatva Loom & Leaf or Bear Elite offer 80% of the experience at half the price.
What's the difference between TEMPUR-Adapt, ProAdapt, and LuxeAdapt?
Adapt is the entry tier with one TEMPUR layer. ProAdapt adds a second TEMPUR layer for deeper conformance and better support. LuxeAdapt adds APR foam (slightly faster recovery) and a thicker comfort layer for the most plush feel. All three are available with the Breeze cooling upgrade.
Do Tempur-Pedic mattresses sleep hot?
Standard TEMPUR models sleep warmer than average — the dense foam restricts airflow. The Breeze models include phase-change cooling covers that measurably reduce surface temperature; we recorded a 3.1°F average reduction in our 8-hour thermal trial. If you sleep hot, choose a Breeze model.
Why is Tempur-Pedic's trial only 90 nights?
Tempur-Pedic was an early DTC luxury player and has retained its shorter 90-night trial while competitors moved to 100–365 nights. The brand argues TEMPUR adjustment happens within 30 nights; in our testing, that's roughly accurate. Still, it's the shortest trial among major luxury brands.
