Eight Sleep Mattress Review
Active temperature control and sleep tracking built into the bed.
About Eight Sleep
Eight Sleep is a sleep-technology company more than a mattress company. Its Pod system circulates temperature-controlled water through a mattress cover, actively heating or cooling each side of the bed independently.
The system pairs with a hub and an app that tracks heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and sleep stages, then adjusts temperature automatically through the night.
You can buy the Pod as a full mattress or as a cover that fits over an existing bed — the cover is the better value if your current mattress is comfortable and your only problem is temperature. Note that the platform requires an ongoing subscription for full app features.
What they make
Active-cooling mattress covers, the Pod mattress system, and sleep-tracking software.

Eight Sleep Signature Technologies
Active Water Cooling
Water circulated through the cover to hold each side of the bed at a set temperature — roughly 55°F to 110°F.
Dual-Zone Control
Independent temperature setpoints per side, which resolves the most common couples' conflict in bed.
Autopilot Sleep Tracking
Contactless biometric tracking that adjusts temperature by sleep stage without a wearable.
Best for
- Hot sleepers who have tried passive cooling beds and still overheat
- Couples with opposing temperature preferences
- Data-driven buyers who want nightly sleep metrics
- People who want to keep their current mattress (buy the cover only)
Not ideal for
- Buyers who dislike subscriptions
- Anyone who wants a silent, appliance-free bedroom — the hub makes some noise
- Budget shoppers

Eight Sleep FAQ
Do I need the Eight Sleep subscription?
The hardware runs without it, but the sleep tracking, Autopilot temperature adjustment, and health metrics are subscription features. Budget for the annual cost when comparing against a passive cooling mattress.
Can I use the Pod cover on my current mattress?
Yes — the Pod Cover fits most mattresses between roughly 10 and 12 inches thick. It is the cheaper route if your mattress is comfortable and heat is your only complaint.
Is Eight Sleep better than a cooling mattress?
For pure temperature control, yes — active water cooling holds a setpoint that no foam, gel, or phase-change fabric can match. For comfort, support, and durability, a well-built hybrid mattress still matters, which is why the cover-only option is popular.
