Purple Mattress Review
Hyper-Elastic Polymer GelFlex Grid — a feel unlike any other mattress.
About Purple
Purple launched in 2015 with viral marketing (the famous "raw egg test" videos) and a genuinely novel product: a Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid originally engineered by founders Tony and Terry Pearce for industrial cushioning applications. The grid collapses under pressure points (hips, shoulders) but stays firm under support zones, producing a feel that doesn't resemble foam or coils.
The brand went public in 2021 (NASDAQ: PRPL) and has since expanded from one all-grid mattress to a full hybrid lineup — Purple Plus, Purple Restore, Purple RestorePremier, and the all-grid Purple Mattress at the entry level.
Purple is genuinely polarizing in our test panel: roughly 70% of testers love the unique grid feel, 20% find it too firm or unusual, and 10% can't adjust at all. Try it in person if possible — Purple ships to Mattress Firm and selected retailers.
What they make
Mattresses with Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid; pillows; sheets; seat cushions; pet beds.
Origin
Manufactured in Alpine, Utah and Atlanta, GA
Purple Signature Technologies
GelFlex Grid
2-inch hyper-elastic polymer grid with 1,400+ open cells — collapses under pressure but stays firm under support, producing a unique floating sensation.
Premium Coil Hybrid Construction
Restore and RestorePremier models add zoned pocketed coils under the grid for hybrid support and bounce.
Multi-Zone GelFlex (RestorePremier)
Different grid stiffness across the surface — softer at shoulders, firmer at lumbar, providing adaptive zoned support.
Best for
- Hot sleepers — the open-grid construction has industry-leading airflow
- Heavier sleepers — the grid handles 250+ lb without bottoming out
- Those who hate the "sinking" feel of memory foam
- Side sleepers needing pressure relief without contouring (Purple Plus and up)
Not ideal for
- Memory foam loyalists — Purple's feel is the opposite of contouring foam
- Budget buyers (entry-level Purple Mattress is $1,099+ for a Queen)
- Those who can't test in person — Purple's feel is uniquely hard to describe

Purple FAQ
Is the Purple mattress actually different?
Yes — genuinely. The GelFlex Grid is a real engineering innovation, not a marketing gimmick. It produces a feel unlike any foam, latex, or innerspring construction. About 70% of testers love it, but it's worth trying in person before committing because the sensation is hard to describe.
Which Purple mattress is best?
For most buyers, the Purple Plus (one inch of additional comfort foam under the grid) hits the sweet spot of pressure relief and grid feel. The Restore and RestorePremier add hybrid coil support for more bounce. The original Purple Mattress is firm and best for stomach sleepers or budget shoppers.
Does the Purple grid sleep cool?
Yes — the open polymer grid has more airflow than any solid foam construction. In our 8-hour thermal lab, Purple mattresses maintained the lowest sustained surface temperatures of any mid-luxury brand. The grid also doesn't trap body heat the way memory foam does.
Is Purple good for back pain?
For lumbar support — yes, particularly Purple Restore and RestorePremier with zoned grids. The hyper-elastic polymer holds the spine in alignment without the contouring required by memory foam, which can be ideal for back pain. For severe back pain, also consider Saatva Rx or Helix Dusk Luxe.
