Tuft & Needle Mattress Review
The original value bed-in-a-box, now part of Serta Simmons.
About Tuft & Needle
Tuft & Needle helped create the bed-in-a-box category in 2012 with a single mattress at a single price, sold online only. The pitch was radical simplicity against a showroom industry built on confusion.
The company merged with Serta Simmons Bedding in 2018 but continues to operate its own product line, including the Original, the Mint, and the Hybrid.
The Original remains one of the best sub-$800 queens we test. It uses adaptive polyfoam rather than memory foam, so it responds quickly and does not sleep as warm as budget memory-foam competitors.
What they make
Value adaptive-foam and hybrid mattresses, plus pillows, sheets, frames, and protectors.
Origin
American — manufactured in the US
Tuft & Needle Signature Technologies
T&N Adaptive Foam
A fast-responding polyfoam with graphite and cooling gel that avoids memory foam's slow sink and heat retention.
Ceramic Gel Beads
Cooling beads used in the Mint and Hybrid comfort layers to pull heat from contact points.
Reinforced Perimeter Coils
Firmer edge coils on the Hybrid so the usable sleep surface extends closer to the sides.
Best for
- First mattresses, guest rooms, and tight budgets
- Back and combination sleepers of average weight
- Shoppers who want simplicity rather than a huge lineup
- People who dislike memory-foam sink
Not ideal for
- Heavier sleepers needing long-term durability
- Side sleepers who need deep shoulder relief (choose the Mint)
- Buyers wanting luxury materials

Tuft & Needle FAQ
Is Tuft & Needle still good after the Serta merger?
Yes — the product line is still designed and built to T&N's own spec, and our current samples measure the same firmness and density as pre-merger units. The main change is broader retail availability.
Original, Mint, or Hybrid?
Original is the value pick at medium-firm. Mint adds an inch of foam and more pressure relief for side sleepers. The Hybrid adds coils, better edge support, and better airflow — the pick for couples and heavier sleepers.
How long does a Tuft & Needle mattress last?
Plan on six to eight years for the Original with average use, which is normal for its price band. The Hybrid's coil core pushes that closer to eight to ten.
