    Our Verdict

The Wheat Dream is Zonli's best-selling shikibuton-style floor mattress and the one we would buy out of the lineup. It layers breathable cotton over hollow-fiber batting and a memory foam core, expanding to roughly three inches — thick enough that a hip does not bottom out on a hardwood floor, thin enough to roll up and strap into a closet in under a minute. It is OEKO-TEX certified, the cover unzips and goes in the washing machine, and a queen runs about $189 on promo. Treat it as a guest bed, a dorm or apartment bed, a floor-sleeping setup, or a camping pad rather than a replacement for a full-height mattress, and it is one of the best values in sleep gear we have tested.

    Lab measurements: in the queue

The Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.

    What We Love

    • Three inches expanded is genuinely enough padding over a hard floor
    • Folds and rolls with reinforced straps — stores in a closet or car trunk
    • Removable, machine-washable cover (rare at this price)
    • OEKO-TEX certified fabrics with no lingering off-gassing smell
    • Sleeps cool: cotton shell and open fiber fill breathe far better than solid foam
    • Frequently discounted 50%+ — queen lands near $189

    What Could Be Better

    • Not a permanent primary bed for most adults over about 200 lb
    • No meaningful edge support — it is a pad, not a mattress
    • Needs to be flipped, aired out, and rolled periodically or the fill compresses
    • 1-year warranty and a 30-night trial are short by mattress standards

    Best For

    • Guest beds
    • Floor sleepers and tatami setups
    • Small apartments and dorms
    • Kids' sleepovers and camping
    • Anyone needing a firm surface for back pain

    Not Ideal For

    • Heavier sleepers wanting nightly primary-bed support
    • Side sleepers who need deep shoulder cradling
    • Anyone who wants edge support to sit on

    Mattress Construction

    1

    Cotton Outer Shell

100% breathable cotton cover that unzips and goes in the washing machine

    2

    Hollow-Fiber Batting

Lofted fiber layers that provide the surface cushion and let air pass through

    3

    Memory Foam Core

Thin foam core that stops the hip from bottoming out on a hard floor

    4

    Reinforced Base Panel

Tufted base with sewn-in straps so the mattress rolls and stays rolled

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

At 6.5/10 firmness, the Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress's 6.5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 7.9/10 for support.

    Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6.5/10, the Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.

    Combination Sleepers

The Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress's japanese floor futon construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Memory foam's slower response can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning. If you change positions frequently, consider a hybrid alternative.

Which Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress Model Should You Buy?

Zonli sells floor sleeping rather than mattresses in the conventional sense. The lineup splits into three things: futon mattresses you sleep on, tatami mats that go underneath them, and floor seating. Prices below are the brand's queen (or largest) pricing at list — Zonli discounts aggressively and runs 50%+ promos for most of the year, so the sale column is closer to what you will actually pay.

Is three inches enough to sleep on?

This is the question everyone asks about floor futons, and the honest answer is: it depends on your weight and what is under it. At roughly three inches expanded, the Wheat Dream keeps most sleepers under about 200 lb off the floor comfortably on carpet or over a tatami mat. Directly on hardwood or concrete, side sleepers over that weight will feel the hip land.

The fix is the layering the tradition already prescribes. A tatami or coconut-fiber mat underneath adds firmness plus airflow, and the futon on top handles the cushioning. That two-piece setup is why shikibuton sleeping works at three inches when a three-inch topper on a bad box spring does not.

The moisture problem nobody warns you about

Body heat drives moisture downward all night. On a raised mattress it evaporates out the sides; on a floor futon it has nowhere to go and condenses against the floor. Left flat for weeks, that is how floor mattresses grow mildew on the underside — and it is the single most common complaint about every brand in this category, not just Zonli.

Two habits solve it entirely. Roll and stand the futon up several times a week so both faces air out, and put a breathable mat underneath so there is a gap for air movement. Zonli's CocoShield tatami exists for exactly this, and buying the two together is the difference between a futon that lasts four years and one that smells at eight months.

Trial, warranty, and what to expect from the brand

Zonli runs a 30-night trial and a 1-year warranty, which are short by mattress-industry standards but normal for the floor-mattress category. At $99–$189 the risk profile is closer to buying bedding than buying a bed, and returns are handled through the brand directly with free shipping over $100.

Fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified, which matters more here than on a standard mattress because your face is much closer to the surface and the covers get washed often. In our testing there was no meaningful off-gassing after the first 24 hours of airing out.

Perfect guest setup for a small apartment

We have no second bedroom. This rolls into the hall closet and comes out for visitors. Two different guests have told me they slept better on it than on our old air mattress, which is not a high bar, but still.

Firm in a good way for my back

I switched to floor sleeping for lower back pain and this is the third pad I have tried. It is firm without being punishing. Only note is you have to fluff and roll it weekly or the middle packs down.

    Washable cover sold me

Kid spilled juice on it week two. Cover unzipped, went through the wash, came out fine. That alone is worth the price difference over the cheap Amazon versions.

How We Tested the Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress

Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the Zonli Zonli Wheat Dream Futon Mattress.

    Panel Testing

Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.

    Pressure Mapping

We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.

    Value Assessment

Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.

Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
