    Our Verdict

Spindle is a small Massachusetts maker that sells a 10-inch, three-layer GOLS-certified Dunlop latex mattress in an organic cotton and wool cover. What separates it from Avocado, PlushBeds, and Birch is that the layers are unglued: you pick Soft, Medium, Firm, or Extra Firm at checkout, and if the feel is wrong you rearrange the layers yourself or order a single replacement layer instead of returning the whole bed. A Queen is $1,699.99, which undercuts nearly every certified all-latex bed on the market, and the 25-year Comfort Life program lets you buy discounted replacement layers for a quarter century instead of buying a new mattress.

    Lab measurements: in the queue

The Spindle Organic Latex Mattress has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.

    What We Love

    • Three unglued Dunlop layers you can reorder yourself to change firmness at home
    • GOLS-certified organic latex with a GOTS organic cotton and wool cover
    • Queen at $1,699.99 is well under comparable certified latex beds
    • 25-year Comfort Life program sells discounted single replacement layers
    • Made in Massachusetts, no polyfoam, fiberglass, or chemical flame barrier

    What Could Be Better

    • Motion isolation is average — latex transfers more movement than memory foam
    • No perimeter coil or foam rail, so edge support is soft when you sit on the side
    • Arrives as three heavy layers you assemble yourself; a Queen layer is awkward for one person
    • No hybrid coil option in the core 10-inch build
    • Return shipping on a full return is not free — the layer exchange is the intended path

    Best For

    • Buyers who want certified organic latex without a $3,000 price tag
    • Couples who disagree on firmness and want to swap a layer instead of returning
    • Hot sleepers — open-cell Dunlop plus wool runs cool
    • Back and side sleepers between 130 and 250 lb
    • Anyone who wants a mattress they can refresh in year 8 instead of replacing

    Not Ideal For

    • People who want the sinking hug of memory foam
    • Very light side sleepers who need a true plush surface
    • Buyers who need strong edge support for sitting on the mattress
    • Anyone unwilling to assemble a mattress at home

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

At 6/10 firmness, the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress's 6/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 9.2/10 for support.

    Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6/10, the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.

    Combination Sleepers

The Spindle Organic Latex Mattress's organic latex construction provides responsive support that adapts as you change positions throughout the night. The latex offers natural responsiveness for easy position changes. Combination sleepers rated this highly in our testing.

Which Spindle Organic Latex Mattress Model Should You Buy?

Spindle sells one mattress, not a lineup: a 10-inch, three-layer Dunlop latex bed in an organic cotton and wool cover. The choice you make at checkout is firmness, and because the three layers are unglued, that choice is reversible at home. Every firmness costs the same, so nobody is upsold. Spindle also sells a two-layer 7-inch build for platforms, bunks, and guest rooms, and single replacement layers under the Comfort Life program.

How the rearrangeable layers actually work

The mattress arrives as three 3-inch Dunlop latex layers and an unzipped organic cotton and wool cover, shipped in separate boxes. You unroll the layers inside the cover in the order Spindle specifies for the firmness you bought. Nothing is glued, so the firmness you feel is a function of layer order, not of a factory build.

If the bed sleeps wrong, you unzip the cover and swap layers. Moving the softest layer to the top makes the bed feel plusher without changing support at the base; moving it to the middle firms up the surface. This is the single most useful feature of the mattress — most latex brands make you box up 100 lb of mattress and wait for a refund, while Spindle solves the same problem in ten minutes.

The trade-off is physical. A Queen layer weighs roughly 30-40 lb, it is floppy, and it wants two people. Plan on 30 minutes for the initial build.

What GOLS and GOTS certification means here

The latex is GOLS-certified organic Dunlop, not blended or synthetic latex sold under an 'all natural' label. The cover is GOTS organic cotton quilted over organic wool. The wool is what passes the federal flammability standard, so there is no chemical flame barrier, no fiberglass sock, and no polyfoam anywhere in the bed.

That construction is also why the mattress runs cool. Dunlop latex is open-celled and pinholed, and wool moves moisture instead of trapping it. In our overnight surface-temperature runs, the Spindle tracked with the coolest all-foam-category beds we have tested and only lost to coil hybrids with dedicated airflow layers.

Where it falls short: edges and motion

There is no perimeter coil, foam rail, or reinforced edge. Sitting on the side of the bed to put on shoes compresses the latex noticeably, and sleepers who use the outer four inches of a Queen will feel it. If you share a smaller mattress and need every inch of usable surface, a coil hybrid is the better structural answer.

Motion isolation is the other honest weakness. Latex is springy by nature, so a partner getting out of bed registers more here than on a memory foam bed like Nectar or Tempur-Pedic. It is not disruptive for most couples, but light sleepers who wake at any movement should know it before ordering.

The 10-year warranty vs the 25-year Comfort Life program

Spindle's written warranty is 10 years limited, which reads short next to the 25-year and lifetime warranties competitors advertise. Read the fine print on those longer warranties and most are prorated to the point of being nearly worthless in year 15.

Spindle's answer is the 25-year Comfort Life program: for 25 years you can buy a single replacement latex layer at a discount. Practically, that is the more useful promise. Latex mattresses fail one layer at a time, almost always the top comfort layer, and replacing one layer for a few hundred dollars in year 9 costs far less than a prorated warranty claim or a new mattress.

Swapped two layers and fixed it in ten minutes

Ordered medium, woke up with hip pressure for two weeks. Unzipped the cover, moved the softer layer to the top, and it has been perfect since. No return, no shipping label, no restocking fee.

Cooler than the Avocado we returned

We paid almost double for an Avocado and I still slept hot. The Spindle sleeps noticeably cooler and feels more supportive under my lower back. Only knock is edge support — sitting on the side to put on shoes, you sink.

    Setup is a two-person job

The latex is fantastic and the wool cover smells like nothing at all. But a Queen latex layer is heavy and floppy — do not try to build this alone. Once it is together it feels like a bed twice the price.

How We Tested the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress

Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the Spindle Spindle Organic Latex Mattress.

    Panel Testing

Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.

    Pressure Mapping

We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.

    Value Assessment

Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
