    Best Stretchy Fit

    Purple Mattress Protector

Purple · $79–$119 · Stretchy jersey knit + polyurethane membrane

    8.7/10

Designed specifically to work with Purple mattresses (but great on any bed), this protector uses a super-stretchy jersey knit that won't alter your mattress's feel or responsiveness. It's particularly important for Purple owners since a tight protector can restrict the Purple Grid. The breathable membrane is waterproof while allowing airflow, and it fits mattresses up to 17 inches deep.

How to Choose a Mattress Protector

Four decisions cover almost every buyer: waterproof membrane type, fitted vs. encasement, cooling, and mattress depth. Get those right and price becomes a secondary concern — most sleepers are well served in the $30–$50 range.

    • Membrane: Breathable polyurethane is the standard. Avoid PVC vinyl — it is the only material that measurably raised surface temperature in our 8-hour infrared test (+1.8°F) and it cracks within a year of washing.
    • Style: Fitted-sheet protectors are easier to launder and are enough for spills, sweat, and allergens. A zippered six-sided encasement is the only style that reliably blocks bed bugs.
    • Cooling: Only worth the $70+ premium if you already sleep hot. Phase-change fabrics (Outlast®, SmartClimate®) genuinely moderate surface temperature, but the effect fades after roughly 40 wash cycles.
    • Depth: Measure your mattress, then add any topper. Pillow-top and hybrid beds over 14 inches need a deep-pocket cover, or the corners pop off nightly.

    How We Tested

Each protector spent 30 nights on a working bed in our Encinitas lab, then went through a controlled 250 ml water pour, an infrared surface-temperature comparison against the same unprotected mattress, a decibel check for crinkle noise during position changes, and ten wash-dry cycles to see which membranes survived laundering. Scores weight waterproofing and breathability most heavily, then noise, fit, and warranty terms.

    Care and Replacement

Wash every one to two months in hot water (130°F+) to kill dust mites, and tumble dry on low — high heat is what destroys waterproof membranes. Plan to replace a waterproof protector every one to two years, sooner if the backing stiffens or cracks. Keep the receipt with your mattress paperwork: brands like Tempur-Pedic, Saatva, and Helix deny warranty claims on stained beds, so the protector is what keeps that coverage enforceable.
