Saatva's reputation is built on innerspring support, not deep foam contouring — which is why most "best for side sleepers" lists feature foam-heavy brands like Helix Sunset Luxe or Nectar Premier instead. But the Saatva lineup does include two models that work well for side sleepers when configured correctly. This guide is for shoppers who want a Saatva specifically.
WHY SIDE SLEEPING IS HARDER ON A SAATVA. Side sleepers concentrate body weight on shoulders and hips — narrow contact surfaces with high pressure-per-square-inch. They need a mattress with at least 2.5–3" of conforming comfort material to relieve those pressure points without misaligning the spine. Most Saatva models have thinner comfort layers because their support comes from the coil system. The two exceptions: the Classic Plush Soft and the Loom & Leaf Relaxed Soft.
BEST PICK #1: SAATVA CLASSIC IN PLUSH SOFT. The Classic Plush Soft has the brand's thickest Euro pillow top (approximately 3" of foam over the dual-coil system). At a 3 on the firmness scale, it's the softest model in the catalog. Best for: side sleepers under 150 lbs who want the responsive innerspring feel without sacrificing pressure relief. Avoid if: you weigh over 180 lbs (you'll bottom out into the firmer support core, defeating the purpose).
BEST PICK #2: LOOM & LEAF IN RELAXED FIRM. Despite the name, Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm is closer to medium (5–6 on the scale) and has 5" of memory foam comfort layers — significantly thicker than the Classic. Best for: side sleepers 130–230 lbs who want pressure relief and contouring with Saatva's build quality and white-glove delivery. The Loom & Leaf Firm is too firm for most side sleepers.
HEAVIER SIDE SLEEPERS (230+ LBS). Neither Classic Plush Soft nor Loom & Leaf works well above 230 lbs for side sleeping. The better Saatva option is the Saatva HD in Plush Soft — its reinforced 14-gauge coils prevent bottoming out while the thicker comfort layer relieves shoulder/hip pressure. The HD is the only Saatva designed specifically for sleepers in the 230–500 lb range.
PETITE SIDE SLEEPERS (UNDER 130 LBS). Even Plush Soft can feel firmer than ideal at low body weights. If you're under 130 lbs and want a Saatva, consider adding a 2" memory foam topper after the break-in period. Saatva sells one ($350) but a third-party Tempur-Topper Cloud delivers similar results at half the price.
PRESSURE-RELIEF DATA FROM OUR LAB. We tested all three Classic firmnesses with a pressure-mapping mat at 145 lbs side-lying. Plush Soft: 38 mmHg peak shoulder pressure (very good). Luxury Firm: 52 mmHg (moderate — borderline for side sleepers). Firm: 68 mmHg (poor for side sleepers — exceeds the 50 mmHg threshold associated with morning shoulder pain).
WHEN A NON-SAATVA OPTION IS BETTER. If side sleeping is your dominant position and you have no other reason to prefer Saatva specifically, a Helix Sunset Luxe ($1,499 queen) or WinkBed Softer ($1,799) outperforms even Saatva Plush Soft on pressure relief while costing less. See our best mattress for side sleepers guide for the full ranking.
PILLOW PAIRING MATTERS. A Saatva for side sleeping requires a high-loft pillow (5–7" thick) to fill the shoulder gap. Saatva's Latex Pillow ($165) is excellent. Cheaper alternatives: Coop Home Goods adjustable ($75) or Tempur-Cloud High Profile ($120). Without the right pillow, even Plush Soft causes neck pain in side sleepers.
BOTTOM LINE. For side sleepers who want a Saatva: Plush Soft if under 150 lbs, Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm if 150–230 lbs, Saatva HD Plush Soft if over 230 lbs. Pair with a high-loft pillow. If you have no brand preference, foam-heavy hybrids from Helix or WinkBeds usually beat Saatva on pure pressure relief.
