Zoned Support
Construction that varies firmness along the length of the mattress — typically softer at the shoulders, firmer under the lumbar and hips — instead of using one uniform surface.
Zoning can be built into coils (thicker-gauge wire or higher coil density in the lumbar third), into foam (deeper convolutions or channel cuts at the shoulder), or into latex (different ILD slabs laid end to end). Three-zone and five-zone layouts are the most common; some premium beds run seven.
The purpose is to solve the shoulder-versus-hip conflict. A side sleeper needs the shoulder to sink several inches while the pelvis stays supported, and one uniform firmness cannot deliver both. Zoning lets the same mattress be a 4/10 at the shoulder and a 6.5/10 under the hips.
Zoning only works if you sleep where the designer expects. Sleeping diagonally, sideways across the bed, or well above or below the intended head position puts your hips in the shoulder zone and can make a zoned bed feel worse than an unzoned one.
Marketing inflation is common here. Count the zones that actually change material or gauge — a printed graphic showing five zones over a single uniform foam slab is not zoned support.
Zoning addresses a real anatomical problem: the hips carry the most weight over the smallest area, while the lumbar region needs support rather than sinkage. A zoned bed uses firmer coils or denser foam under the midsection and softer material at the shoulders so a side sleeper's shoulder can drop without the waist collapsing.
Execution varies enormously. Meaningful zoning uses different coil gauges or foam densities in defined bands; cosmetic zoning cuts decorative channels into a single uniform foam slab and calls it zoned. If a brand cannot say what physically differs between zones, assume the second.
What This Means for Shoppers
Zoning is most valuable for side sleepers, combination sleepers and anyone with a broad shoulder relative to their waist. It matters less if you sleep flat on your back at an average weight.
