Edge Support
How firm and stable a mattress feels when sitting or sleeping near the perimeter. Important for small bedrooms (where you sit on the bed to dress) and for couples sharing the full sleeping surface.
Edge support is engineered separately from the main sleeping surface — typically through reinforced perimeter coils on hybrids, denser foam encasements on memory foam mattresses, or wire-rod frames on traditional innersprings.
Strong edge support extends the usable sleeping surface to the full mattress dimensions. Weak edge support causes a 'rolling off' sensation when sleeping near the edge — effectively shrinking a Queen mattress to a usable Full-size sleeping area for couples.
Lab measurement: a 230 lb subject sits on the perimeter for 30 seconds; sinkage is measured in inches. Excellent: under 2.0" sinkage. Good: 2.0–2.5". Acceptable: 2.5–3.0". Poor: above 3.0".
Hybrid mattresses generally have superior edge support to all-foam mattresses due to the structural integrity of perimeter pocketed coils. Premium memory foam mattresses (Tempur-Pedic, high-density Saatva models) approach hybrid edge performance through dense foam encasements.
Edge support is what lets you use the full width of a mattress rather than the middle two-thirds. Reinforced perimeter coils, high-density foam rails or a firmer encasement all keep the border from collapsing when you sit on the edge to put on shoes or sleep close to the side.
It matters most for couples on a queen, older sleepers who push off the edge to stand, and anyone with a smaller bed. All-foam mattresses are structurally worse at this than hybrids; if you need edge strength, a coil-based bed with a foam encasement is the reliable answer.
