Mattress weight matters more than people realize. It determines whether you can move it solo, what frame can support it, and shipping/return logistics. Below are typical weights based on our lab measurements of 200+ mattresses.
BY SIZE (QUEEN BASELINE). Twin: 45–60% of queen weight. Twin XL: 50–65%. Full: 75–85%. Queen: 100% (baseline). King: 130–150%. California King: 125–145%.
BY MATERIAL — QUEEN SIZE (60" x 80").
INNERSPRING: 60–110 lbs. Lightest mainstream option. Most coils + thin foam comfort layer.
POCKETED COIL HYBRID: 90–140 lbs. Heavier due to foam layers above the coil unit.
MEMORY FOAM (ALL FOAM): 70–110 lbs. Density-dependent — a 14" Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt weighs ~120 lbs; a budget 10" Zinus weighs ~75 lbs.
NATURAL LATEX: 140–200 lbs. Heaviest mainstream type. A Saatva Zenhaven queen weighs ~177 lbs; a queen all-Dunlop latex (Avocado Vegan) hits ~145 lbs.
AIRBED (SLEEP NUMBER): 90–130 lbs. Includes pump and chambers.
WATERBED: 1,200–1,800 lbs WHEN FILLED. Empty bladder is ~25 lbs. Always drain before moving.
SPECIFIC POPULAR MODELS — QUEEN.
Saatva Classic: 119 lbs. Helix Midnight: 87 lbs. Purple Hybrid Premier 4: 162 lbs. Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt: 105 lbs. Casper Original: 91 lbs. DreamCloud Premier: 109 lbs. Avocado Green: 138 lbs. Nectar Premier: 84 lbs. Eight Sleep Pod 4 Cover (alone): 35 lbs. WinkBed: 130 lbs.
WHY WEIGHT MATTERS. (1) Solo move limit: most adults max out around 80 lbs for stairs. Anything heavier needs two people. (2) Frame weight rating: cheap platform beds top out at 500 lbs total (mattress + sleepers). A 200-lb latex queen + two 200-lb adults exceeds this. (3) Shipping returns: white-glove return service required above 100 lbs. (4) Moving truck: a king latex mattress + box spring is 250+ lbs; account for it.
COMPRESSED-IN-BOX WEIGHTS. Bed-in-a-box mattresses ship roll-packed in a 17–22" diameter cylinder. The weight is identical to expanded; only volume changes. A queen Casper ships at 91 lbs in a 21x21x42" box.
IF YOU MUST MOVE A MATTRESS SOLO. Use a mattress bag with handles ($15 on Amazon). Slide on cardboard for hardwood floors. Never bend a foam mattress more than 90° — internal foam can crack.
