Memory Foam
A viscoelastic polyurethane foam that responds to body heat and pressure, slowly conforming to body shape and rebounding slowly after pressure is removed.
Memory foam (technically 'viscoelastic polyurethane foam') was developed by NASA in 1966 to absorb impact in airline seats. It became a mainstream mattress material in the 1990s after Tempur-Pedic licensed the patent and brought the first memory foam mattress to market.
Memory foam's defining property is viscoelasticity — it responds to both pressure and temperature. Body heat softens the foam at contact points, allowing deep contouring; cooler areas remain firmer for support. When pressure is removed, the foam slowly rebounds (typical recovery: 1.5–4 seconds vs latex's 0.3–0.5 seconds).
Modern memory foam is engineered with additives to address the material's two main weaknesses: heat retention (gel-infused, copper-infused, or open-cell structures improve airflow) and slow recovery (faster-response 'TEMPUR-APR' formulations reduce the 'stuck' feeling).
Memory foam quality is determined by density (4+ PCF for quality construction, 5+ PCF for premium) more than any other spec. Lower-density memory foam ('budget memory foam' under 3 PCF) breaks down within 3–5 years and develops permanent body impressions.
Memory foam's defining property is that it responds to heat and pressure over time rather than instantly. That slow conform is why it excels at pressure relief for side sleepers, and equally why combination sleepers dislike it: the material has to release before it re-forms, so changing position feels like climbing out of a mold.
Modern formulations have narrowed the gap. Open-cell structures, gel infusion, graphite and copper all raise heat conductivity, and plant-based polyols reduce the temperature sensitivity that made early memory foam rock-hard in a cold bedroom. If your only memory-foam experience is a mattress from the 2000s, current versions sleep meaningfully cooler and recover faster.

Memory foam excels at pressure relief and motion isolation — making it the best choice for side sleepers and couples. Avoid memory foam if you sleep hot, change positions frequently, or are over 250 lb (denser foams or hybrid construction will hold up better).
