Foam Density

Foam density (sometimes 'PCF' for pounds per cubic foot) measures how much material is packed into a given volume of foam. It is the single most important indicator of long-term durability — denser foam resists body impressions and breakdown over years of use.

Memory foam density bands: budget foam runs 2.5–3.5 PCF (durability under 5 years), mid-range runs 4.0–5.0 PCF (durability 7–10 years), and premium runs 5.0+ PCF (10+ year durability — Tempur-Pedic uses ~7 PCF). Density independently of ILD; a 5 PCF foam can be soft or firm.

Polyfoam density bands: support core polyfoam at 1.8 PCF or higher is considered durable; below 1.5 PCF foam will sag rapidly under regular use. Comfort-layer polyfoam at 1.5 PCF is acceptable; lower densities are budget construction.

Latex density is reported differently — natural latex typically runs 4.5–5.5 PCF as a function of the sap-to-foam ratio rather than a manufacturing target. Latex is uniformly more durable than synthetic foams at any density.

Density measures mass per cubic foot and is the closest thing the foam industry has to a durability rating. It is frequently confused with firmness, but the two are independent: a high-density foam can be very soft, and a low-density foam can be uncomfortably firm. Density tells you how long the feel will last, not what the feel is.

The thresholds worth memorizing: memory foam at or above 4 lb/ft³ and polyfoam above 1.8 lb/ft³ in comfort layers hold up well past the warranty window; below 3 lb/ft³ memory foam typically softens noticeably within two years. Brands that publish density on every layer are telling you they have nothing to hide.
