GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the most-recognized certification for organic textile manufacturing. To qualify, a fabric must contain at least 95% certified-organic fibers (cotton, wool, hemp, silk) and meet strict standards on dyes, finishes, water use, and labor practices throughout the supply chain.

GOTS certifies the entire textile supply chain — not just the raw fiber. Cotton must be grown organically (no synthetic pesticides, GMO-free), processed without prohibited chemicals (chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, heavy metals), and manufactured under audited fair-labor conditions.

In mattresses, GOTS most commonly applies to cotton covers and wool fire barriers. Wool used as a natural flame retardant (replacing chemical flame retardants required by federal law) is typically GOTS-certified on premium organic mattresses.

Mainstream brands carrying GOTS certification on cover materials include Avocado, Birch, Saatva (organic cotton cover), Naturepedic, and PlushBeds. Most non-organic brands use synthetic cover fabrics (polyester, blended) that are not GOTS-eligible.

GOTS certifies organic fiber content through the entire chain — farming, spinning, dyeing, sewing — plus environmental and social criteria at each processing step. 'GOTS certified' requires at least 95% certified organic fiber; 'made with organic' requires 70%, and the difference is rarely explained on product pages.

The wording matters more than the logo. Brands frequently advertise 'GOTS certified cotton' when only the raw fiber was certified and the finished mattress cover was not. A genuine certification names the certifying body and carries a license number you can look up.
