CertiPUR-US
A certification program that tests polyurethane foams for harmful chemicals, low VOC emissions, and durability. Standard certification across nearly all reputable foam mattress brands.
CertiPUR-US is a foam certification program run by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam (AFPF), an industry trade association. It is not government-administered but is widely-accepted as the baseline standard for foam safety in the U.S. mattress industry.
Tests verify that the foam contains no ozone-depleting compounds (CFCs), no PBDE flame retardants, no formaldehyde, no mercury or heavy metals, no phthalates regulated by the CPSC, and emits low VOCs (under 0.5 parts per million).
CertiPUR-US does NOT certify the mattress as 'organic' — it only certifies the polyurethane foam components. Organic certification requires GOLS (latex), GOTS (cotton/wool), or MADE SAFE (whole-product). Many reputable brands carry CertiPUR-US for foam plus GOTS for cover materials.
Nearly every U.S. DTC mattress brand (Saatva, Helix, Casper, Nectar, DreamCloud, Bear, Layla, Purple, etc.) carries CertiPUR-US certification on their foam components. Absence of CertiPUR-US is a meaningful red flag.
CertiPUR-US certifies what is absent from polyurethane foam: no PBDE flame retardants, no formaldehyde, no mercury or lead, low VOC emissions and restricted phthalates. It is an industry-funded program, and its scope is narrow — it says nothing about durability, performance or whether the mattress is 'natural'.
Treat it as a floor rather than a distinction. Essentially every reputable foam mattress sold in the US carries it now, so its absence is a warning sign while its presence is unremarkable. If you want assurance about materials rather than just chemistry, look for GOLS, GOTS or OEKO-TEX alongside it.
What This Means for Shoppers
CertiPUR-US is the bare minimum certification to expect on any U.S. foam mattress in 2026. If a brand can't or won't show CertiPUR-US on their foams, walk away. For organic claims, additionally look for GOLS, GOTS, or MADE SAFE.
