Mattress noise is one of the most common late-night annoyances and almost always traceable to one of four sources. The fix depends on which.
SOURCE #1: THE BED FRAME (60% OF CASES). Most "mattress squeak" is actually the frame. Test: lift the mattress off and press down on the foundation. If you hear the noise, it's the frame. Common culprits: loose screws (re-tighten every 6 months), wood-on-wood slat contact (apply beeswax or paraffin to slat ends), or metal frame joints rubbing (apply silicone lubricant or felt pads).
SOURCE #2: WATERPROOF MATTRESS PROTECTOR (20%). Cheap vinyl protectors crinkle audibly with every movement. Replace with a TPU-laminated cotton protector (SafeRest, Saatva Organic) — silent and breathable.
SOURCE #3: COIL FATIGUE (15%). Innerspring and hybrid mattresses develop squeaks as the steel coils lose tension and rub against each other or the foam encasement. Test: press firmly on different zones of the mattress directly. If the noise comes from inside the mattress, it's the coils. There is no fix — coils don't self-repair. Lifespan reached at year 7–10.
SOURCE #4: BOX SPRING (5%). Older box springs squeak as wood and staples loosen. Test: remove mattress, press box spring directly. Replace with a foundation or platform if it's the source.
DIAGNOSTIC ORDER. (1) Lift mattress, test frame alone. (2) Test box spring/foundation alone. (3) Strip protector, test bare mattress. (4) Whatever is left is the source.
FRAME FIXES BY TYPE. Wood platform: tighten all bolts, wax slat ends, add felt pads where wood meets metal. Metal platform: apply silicone spray to all joint connections, tighten bolts, add rubber washers between brackets. Adjustable base: lubricate motor mounts and joint pivots with white lithium grease per manufacturer instructions.
WHEN TO REPLACE. If the source is internal coils on a mattress over 7 years old, replacement is the only fix. If the frame is from IKEA-tier flat-pack and you've already tightened twice, upgrade to a steel-reinforced platform — they're effectively silent for life.
PREVENTION. Tighten all bed frame hardware quarterly. Avoid jumping or sitting heavily on the edge. Rotate mattress every 6 months to distribute coil wear evenly.
