That sharp "new mattress" smell is called off-gassing — volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released as foam layers expand and stabilize after being compressed in shipping. It is normal and, for CertiPUR-US certified foams, well below health-impact thresholds.
TYPICAL TIMELINE. Most odor dissipates within 72 hours. Lingering faint smell can persist 5–7 days. By day 14, even sensitive sleepers shouldn't notice it. Memory foam off-gasses longest; latex (especially Dunlop) has a milder rubber smell that fades in 1–3 days; innerspring barely off-gasses at all.
HOW TO SPEED IT UP. Unbox the mattress in the room you intend to sleep in — moving it after unboxing is harder than it looks. Open windows for 24–48 hours. Run a ceiling fan or box fan pointed at the mattress. Strip the bedding for the first night and let bare foam breathe. Maintain room temp at 68–72°F — heat accelerates VOC release.
WHAT NOT TO DO. Don't spray air freshener directly on the foam — it traps moisture and adds new chemicals. Don't cover with a vinyl mattress protector during off-gassing — it seals VOCs in. Don't use a steam cleaner on a brand-new foam mattress.
WHEN TO WORRY. If the smell is strong after 14 days, accompanied by visible oily residue, or causing headaches/respiratory irritation that doesn't fade when you leave the room — initiate a return. Reputable brands (Saatva, Helix, Tempur-Pedic, Avocado) offer free returns during their 100+ night trials.
CERTIFICATIONS THAT REDUCE OFF-GASSING. CertiPUR-US (foams), GREENGUARD Gold (low VOC), GOTS (organic textiles), GOLS (organic latex), OEKO-TEX Standard 100. An uncertified Amazon foam mattress can off-gas 2–3× more than a certified equivalent.
SENSITIVE SLEEPERS. If you have asthma, MCS, or a child under 3, choose natural latex (Avocado, Birch by Helix, Saatva Zenhaven) or organic cotton/wool — these have minimal VOC profiles. Plan to sleep elsewhere for the first 48 hours of any new foam mattress.
