Thread count is a scam - here's what actually matters for sheets

Former textile industry worker here. I want to clear up some misconceptions about thread count. Anything marketed above 600TC is almost certainly using multi-ply yarns to inflate the number. What actually matters: fiber quality (long-staple vs short-staple cotton), weave type (percale vs sateen vs twill), and finishing process. A 300TC long-staple percale will feel better and last longer than an 800TC sheet made with inferior cotton. Happy to answer questions about fabric quality!

This is the most helpful post I've seen on sheets. I fell for the 1000TC Egyptian cotton scam from Amazon and those sheets pilled within 2 washes. Switched to Brooklinen 270TC percale and they're infinitely better. Wish I'd read this sooner.
As someone who works in hotel procurement - can confirm everything here. Our best-rated rooms use 300TC percale sheets. We tested 800TC options and they were worse in guest satisfaction surveys. It's all about the cotton quality.
What about linen? I switched to 100% European linen sheets and will never go back to cotton. No thread count to worry about, they get softer with every wash, and they regulate temperature better than any cotton I've tried.

Community answers are the lived experience half of the picture. The other half is measured data. Everything below comes from our own lab work in Encinitas, where we record pressure-mapping results, surface-temperature change over an eight-hour night, motion transfer, and edge-support deflection on every mattress we buy. Use the discussion above for real-world ownership detail — how a bed felt after a year, how a brand handled a warranty claim, whether a sale price was actually a discount — and use the guides below to check those impressions against repeatable measurements before you spend money.
