Melatonin made my sleep WORSE - what actually works naturally?

I have been taking 5mg melatonin for a year and recently learned from my doctor that is WAY too much and was actually disrupting my sleep cycles rather than helping. Since stopping, my sleep has gotten better but I still struggle to fall asleep. Looking for natural alternatives that actually have scientific backing. I have heard about magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, tart cherry juice, valerian root, and glycine. Anyone have experience with these? Also open to behavioral changes - I already avoid screens before bed and keep my room cool.

Magnesium glycinate was a game changer for me. 400mg about an hour before bed. It does not knock you out like melatonin - instead it just makes you feel relaxed and drowsy naturally. I fall asleep in about 15 minutes now vs 45+ before. The glycinate form is important - magnesium citrate will send you to the bathroom, not the bed. Been taking it for 8 months with no tolerance buildup.

Same experience with melatonin. My sleep doctor said 0.5mg is the physiological dose - anything over 1mg is pharmacological and actually disrupts your circadian rhythm long term. For natural alternatives, the combo of L-theanine (200mg) + magnesium glycinate (400mg) has been amazing. L-theanine calms your mind without sedation. Also try keeping a worry journal 2 hours before bed - writing down tomorrow concerns stops the racing thoughts that keep you awake.

Sleep Sage research on this topic

Community answers are the lived experience half of the picture. The other half is measured data. Everything below comes from our own lab work in Encinitas, where we record pressure-mapping results, surface-temperature change over an eight-hour night, motion transfer, and edge-support deflection on every mattress we buy. Use the discussion above for real-world ownership detail — how a bed felt after a year, how a brand handled a warranty claim, whether a sale price was actually a discount — and use the guides below to check those impressions against repeatable measurements before you spend money.

Sleep Sage buys the mattresses it tests and earns commission on some links, which never changes a score. Forum posts are member opinions and are not medical advice; talk to a clinician about persistent pain or a suspected sleep disorder.
