How to shop a mattress showroom without getting played

Showroom floors exist to make every bed feel good for four minutes. Lie down for at least ten in the position you actually sleep in, shoes off, with a pillow close to the loft you use at home. If your hips sink noticeably deeper than your shoulders, or you feel pressure building at the shoulder within a couple of minutes, the bed is wrong for you no matter how good the introduction felt.

Ask for the model's exact name and specification sheet before you discuss price. Retail-exclusive versions of national models often share a marketing name with a different coil count, foam density or cover, which makes online reviews useless and price matching impossible. Once you have the specification, look the model up on our mattress database and compare it against the direct-to-consumer alternatives in the same price band.

Treat the sticker price as fiction. Mattress retail runs on near-permanent promotions, so the number that matters is the out-the-door total including delivery, old-mattress removal, a protector if one is required to keep the warranty valid, and any restocking fee on a return. Get the return window in writing: an in-store comfort exchange is usually far more restrictive than the 100-night online trials, and often allows one swap within the same brand rather than a refund.

Store data is aggregated from public listings and can go out of date; call ahead before driving out. Sleep Sage does not accept payment for placement in this directory, and we do not earn commission on in-store purchases.
