Coil Count

Coil count refers to the total number of pocketed or interconnected coils in the support core of an innerspring or hybrid mattress, traditionally measured at Queen size for cross-brand comparison. A typical Queen ranges from 800 to 2,500+ coils.

More coils generally means each coil bears less load — meaning each can be lighter-gauge, more responsive, and better at independently contouring to body shape. But coil count alone is not a quality indicator: 1,500 cheap coils can perform worse than 800 well-engineered coils.

Marketing claims of '4,000+ coils' or '8,000+ coils' typically count micro-coils in the comfort layer in addition to the support core. These micro-coils add responsiveness but do not contribute the same structural support as the main coil array.

Coil count interacts directly with coil gauge. A high-count, low-gauge mattress (2,000 coils at 13-gauge) will be very firm and durable. A high-count, high-gauge mattress (2,000 coils at 16-gauge) will be plush and responsive but less supportive for heavy sleepers.

Coil count is the most heavily marketed and least useful number in the mattress category. Past roughly 1,000 coils in a queen, adding more requires making each coil narrower, and narrow coils individually support less weight. A 2,000-coil bed is not twice as supportive as a 1,000-coil bed; it is a bed with finer resolution and, usually, thinner wire.

What the number is genuinely good for is comparing within one product line. When a brand offers the same model in two coil counts, the higher count almost always means better contouring around shoulders and hips and slightly better motion isolation. Across brands, compare coil count only alongside gauge, coil height and whether the array is zoned.
